Group Leader

Marc A. Marti-Renom is the Structural Genomics Group Leader

He obtained a PhD in Biophysics from the Autonomous University of Barcelona where he worked on protein folding under the supervision of Professors B. Oliva, F.X. Avilés and M. Karplus (Nobel Laureate for Chemistry 2013). After that, he went for a postdoctoral training on protein structure modeling at the Sali Lab (Rockefeller University) as the recipient of the Burroughs Wellcome Fund fellowship. Later on, he was appointed Assistant Adjunct Professor at University of California in San Francisco. Between 2006 and 2011, he headed the Structural Genomics Group at the Prince Felipe Research Centre in Valencia (CIPF). Currently, he is an ICREA research professor and leads the CNAG-CRG Structural Genomics Group. The group employs the laws of physics and the rules of evolution to develop and apply experimental and computational methods for elucidating the 3D structures of macromolecules and their complexes. The research has resulted so far in over 125 peer-reviewed articles, 16 book chapters or invited reviews, and over 175 oral presentations in national and international venues.

Between 2012 and 2018 Marc A. Marti-Renom was Associate Editor of PLoS Computational Biology and the BMC Structural Biology Journals. He has coordinated two international teams funded by the EU ((Era-Net Pathogenomics Grant) and the HFSP (Research Grants Award). In 2011, he was one of the 55 finalists to the HHMI International Early Career Scientist Competition. Between 2014 and 2020, he was co-PI on the 4DGenome Grant funded by the ERC Synergy program as well as co-PI on the MuG Research project funded by the European Commission H2020 program. Currently, he is co-IP of a La Caixa Health grant as well as an H2020 RIA proposal on Hologenomics. Over the last years, he has played a key role in Europe to promote the 4DNucleome Initiative, which have recently joined forces with the single-cell and organoid communities to form the LifeTime Initiative in Europe to which he is a Steering Committee Member.
